Improved methods for applying 3D web-based visualization at various scales is a recurring theme of papers presented in this session of the Web3D 2020 Conference. The first paper proposes a technique for exchanging geometry in manufacturing between Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) applications, which give a global view of product data from design to disposal, with the more detailed data driving and created during production through a Manufacturing Execution System (MES). A second paper dives down to the smallest length scales currently accessible to science, offering X3D-based solutions for making the instruments and results of research into nuclear structure available to scientists and non-specialists, using 3D visualizations delivered in a virtual reality system. Virtual reality is also a topic for the third paper, which presents the results of an empirical study into the effect of exaggerating physical features and gestures of the avatars — representations of human characters — in virtual reality. Planned and deliberate bending of realism in visualization is shown to be potentially useful. The fourth paper again looks to improving the effectiveness of avatars in the practical application of virtual conferencing, through a system architecture which supports multiple interacting avatars. Our fifth paper is an empirical study of the communication effectiveness of enhancing 2D visualizations of large data sets using depth cues, visual features that the human vision sense can use to generate a mental 3D image; without the data requirements that can make a pure 3D visualization unfeasible for large data sets.
